Mao Qian, former vice president and chief engineer of the Wuhan Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, said that gigabit broadband has a long way to go, and 10,000 gigabit broadband is about to come out.

At present, China has built the world's largest fixed broadband network, and cities above the prefecture level in the country have achieved full coverage of optical fiber networks. The data shows that the total number of fixed Internet broadband access users reached 514 million, an increase of 9.9% year-on-year. The number of rural broadband users nationwide increased by 10.75 million compared with the end of last year, reaching a total of 153 million, an increase of 8.4% year-on-year. The total number of fixed Internet broadband access users with access rates of 100Mbps and above reached 472 million, accounting for 97.4% of the total number of fixed broadband users. The number of users with access rates of 1000Mbps and above was 16.04 million, accounting for 3.3% of the total number of fixed broadband subscribers. Broadband acceleration is a significant feature of the rapid development of modern information society, the current gigabit broadband network into large-scale commercial use, basic telecommunications enterprises to accelerate the deployment of 10GPON technology based on gigabit network.

"Gigabit light bandwidth includes home broadband and industry, urban applications in many aspects." Mao Qian pointed out that high-end and large-scale online games need high bandwidth and low latency access rates to ensure, and gigabit light width can meet this demand. Streaming media social requirements for users' interactivity is particularly high, high definition, high fidelity audio and video interaction requires the network to have large bandwidth, low latency and high stability support, gigabit network is the inevitable choice of streaming media social ultimate experience. Online education, home office, online conference, telemedicine, smart home, safe city, intelligent manufacturing and other applications all need to have a gigabit light width platform in order to have a good user experience.

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Notice of the Action Plan for the Coordinated Development of "Double Gigabit" Networks (2021-2023). Mao Qian said, "In fact, 5G and home broadband have not replaced the relationship, 5G's high-speed flexible mobility and home width of stable and reliable large bandwidth, each applied in different scenarios, can (should) complement each other, coordinated development, go hand in hand, which is also the trend of the times." "Solid-shift synergy, complementary advantages." Mao Qian pointed out that giving full play to the advantages of Gigabit optical networks in indoor and complex environments with large transmission bandwidth, strong anti-interference, and microsecond-level connections, and giving full play to the advantages of high flexibility, mobile enhancement, and large connections of 5G networks, in the long run, the high-quality development of Home Wide and the mutual cooperation of 5G will be the information foundation that supports the innovation and prosperity of various industries. At the same time, PON technology can support the rapid deployment of 5G."

"Fixed broadband access networks are supported by 10G PON access technology, which can bring gigabit broadband access capabilities, but when gigabit network coverage and applications are further upgraded, they are still a bit inadequate." Mao Qian believes that although Gigabit broadband has been realized, there is still a long way to go for future development. With the continuous improvement of people's living standards and the convergence of intelligence, online office/conference/work interaction, etc., put forward more and higher requirements for the network environment, 10 Gigabit broadband is about to come out. Mao Qian expects that in the early stage, 10 Gigabit broadband will be mainly deployed in campus/enterprise/Internet cafes/large customers, and will subsequently develop into home broadband.

Foreignly, Google proposed a plan to deploy 10 Gigabit broadband in 2014; South Korea also proposed to promote 10 Gigabit broadband services in 2018; Japan's NTT East/West launched the 10 Gigabit optical access service in early 2020, with download speeds of 1.25GB per second, and the service provided is symmetrical, with both uplink and downlink bandwidth rates of 10Gbps and a monthly fee of about 380 yuan. The domestic side has also done a lot of exploration and experimentation in 10 Gigabit broadband. In 2012, GiSTV Media completed the solution of the overall solution of 10 Gigabit optical fiber into the home I-PON technology. In 2019, on the basis of the completion of the full coverage of the Gigabit broadband network in Shanghai, China Telecom proposed to accelerate the progress of the 10 Gigabit optical network into commercial buildings and industrial parks. At the same time, the various technologies that support 10 Gigabit broadband are gradually maturing, and 10 Gigabit broadband is visible.

Mao Qian particularly emphasized, "The current fiber price is low, and the bandwidth of PON is difficult to provide higher bandwidth through ODN multi-user sharing, so the PtP solution of fiber direct connection is worth considering when further development." "AI has become the main theme of ICT development, and in the same way, in the process of further development of broadband, AI cannot be absent. Initially, AI is mainly used in operation, maintenance, fault prediction, security protection, etc., and is further applied to broadband network design, self-learning, control, resource dynamic optimization, etc.

Broadband to achieve accurate services, accurate content push is also inseparable from AI, AI can perceive the user experience, so as to achieve on-demand provision of services and content, and solve the problem of efficiency and openness. Mao Qian pointed out that the application of AI to achieve the real intelligence of broadband networks has made the development of broadband networks enter a new stage. However, the application of AI still faces many challenges, such as the mathematical model of broadband devices and networks, the best algorithm, deep learning mode, applicable/dedicated AI chips, etc., which require in-depth research and development, trial and maturity also require a long process, and also need to be developed and faced by the industry!
